LISTEN NOW: Bullseye with Jesse Thorn — Eve
On the latest episode of Bullseye with Jesse Thorn, Eve delved into a few of those topics, talking about her journey from high school battle rapper to one of Hip-Hop's leading ladies. She also get into her life in London and how she's unexpectedly adopted some British lingo. Plus, Eve blows our minds and talks about her classic collaboration with Gwen Stefani.
Posing the question in a rather unique way, Jesse essentially asked Eve if she was born into her persona or if it’s something she had to put together. Tickled by his Spider-Man metaphor used to inquire, Eve noted, “When I started I always had this energy, but I think I didn’t know how I wanted to show up,” about first starting out in Hip-Hop. “I think I kinda had to piece it together and sew it together.”
Listing off the ways she started out, Eve said, “I was banging on lunch tables, cyphers on the corner, and any talent show that would take me.” She continued, “So I was basically doing all the things. I was a battle rapper, that’s where I come from.” Explaining that, “battle rapping is basically just cursing people out and showing your skills… lyrically.”
“Especially since I was a girl, and most of the people I used to battle rap against were guys, I was always obsessed with my lyrics… Because I don’t want to just be good ‘for a girl,’ that was always an obsession of mine. So I did everything,” Eve went on to say, “because I knew I wanted to pursue music as a career.”
